The Samsung Galaxy S has been around for a year now, and fans around the world still like to use it as their smartphone of choice. You might feel that the Samsung Galaxy S has some limitations, or feel that you're missing out on the full experience. Don't hop on over to the Samsung Galaxy S 2 just because you feel the Galaxy S isn't giving you all you need, try these top five tips and tricks to enhance your experience first. If you're in the U.S. use these top five tips and tricks to satiate your hunger for the Galaxy S 2.

Top 5 Samsung Galaxy S Tips and Tricks

  1. Root the Samsung Galaxy S - The biggest yet toughest trick to perform, decision wise, on the Samsung Galaxy S is to root the phone. Depending on the carrier, the steps to rooting the device will be different, some will be hard while others will be very simple. Some are as simple as using a one click installation program after hooking up your Samsung Galaxy S. However, regardless of whether it's easy or hard to root, there's always a chance you may brick your device, so take caution. Rooting the phone allows you to install 3rd party applications, including newer builds of the operating system itself!
  2. Install Antivirus Software - The Samsung Galaxy S is a powerful smartphone, in fact, it can easily be comparable to a miniaturized computer. One thing to note is that there are malicious hackers, always looking for another outlet to gain revenue. Like a computer, the best way to prevent yourself from getting a virus on the Galaxy S is to install antivirus. One of the more popular antivirus applications on the Android Market is Lookout, and it's highly recommended. Being proactive rather than reactive to malicious users is always a good way to protect yourself from being hacked.
  3. Swipe Left, Swipe Right - The contacts screen in the Galaxy S has

a feature that many people overlook. Scroll through your contacts and when you see someone you want to call, select, hold and swipe their name to the right to call them, or swipe their name towards the left to send a text message. This little trick will help you interact with your friends quickly without having to click through the Contacts screen.
  4. Buy a Case, Not a Protective Screen - If you seem to be dropping your Galaxy S a bit often, look into investing some money on a protective case, but don't waste valuable money and time buying a screen protector. Screen protectors are a great way to prevent scratches on your screen but the Samsung Galaxy S has a touchscreen made out of Gorilla Glass. Gorilla Glass helps to make the touchscreen on the Galaxy S pretty much scratch proof. Save the money from buying a protective screen and use it toward something else, such as an extra battery.
  5. Change the Middle Two Application Shortcuts - TouchWiz UI adds four dedicated shortcuts at the bottom of the screen on the Galaxy S. The middle two applications can actually be changed to different applications. Click on the 'Applications' shortcut, then click the menu button on the phone. Two options will appear, Edit and View Type. If you only see View Type, then click it and select Customizable Grid. Click Edit and a faint white outline on the upper left hand corner of your applications will appear. Select and hold an application you want to be in the four dedicated shortcuts, wait for the haptic feedback, then move it into place in the shortcut menu. Remember that only the 2nd and 3rd shortcuts can be replaced.
Use these top five tips and tricks to enhance your experience with an already great smartphone while you wait and decide on whether you want the Galaxy S 2 or another smartphone.
